When Was the Last Time You Looked Up at the Sky?

It was the summer break of 2019.
I sat on the edge of the shared terrace above my apartment, clutching my DSLR, eagerly waiting for the sun to descend behind the towering corporate glass buildings. I felt like a dwarf in an urban jungle. The gentle breeze carried whispers of rain, adding touches of freshness to the air so plain.

With the timeless descent of the sun, its golden rays enveloped the bustling skyline in a warm and radiant glow. The glass surfaces caught the fading light, transforming it into a shimmering prism, adorned with hues of orange and pink. You’d think it was an exceptional sight, but no, it was just an ordinary evening.

With each snap of the shutter, a feeling of hope stirred within me, as if something remarkable lay ahead, just beyond my reach. It took only 2 minutes for the sun to disappear from the horizon, but those two minutes felt like the longest two minutes of my life.

How long since I last experienced that?
When did I stop looking up at the sky?

The sun, the sky and the dance of light and shadow, now, no longer hold my gaze.
Lost in memories, like whispers in a maze.

What I love about looking at the endless sky is that we’re nudged to consider the distant yet visible possibilities. We’re reminded of the things that are beyond our reach right now, but worth pursuing.

“As the sun bids its farewell to rest
Our dreams and passions are at their best”

Standing there, watching the sun dip below the skyline, it’s almost as if time slows down. There’s a sense of calm and wonder. We’re not just observing, but feeling alive, feeling connected to the universe in a way that words can’t fully describe.

It’s ironic how much time we spend looking down — heads buried in screens, avoiding eye contact in every scene; our modern-day typical routine. It’s as if we have become oblivious to the world above us; as if we’re incapable of reaching for the stars.

But when we choose to look up, it’s a declaration that we won’t confine our gaze. The world has inadvertently forced us into short-sightedness where all we can see is what’s happening in front of us — the immediate perspective. But what we are meant to see is the vast possibilities that lie ahead of us — the broader perspective.

The sun symbolises renewal and the promise of a fresh start.
The moon is the flagbearer of cycles and beauty of impermanence.
The stars are reminders of our potential to shine bright in the darkness.

There is inspiration in our everyday life, only if we pause to look up and truly see. Our eyes are like precious gems that reflect the light that is cast upon them.

So let’s look up a little more and marvel at the clouds painted above.
Let’s look up and remind ourselves that we are small beings in this magnificent world and our problems, when viewed in perspective, are not as daunting as they seem to be.

Let’s lift our eyes to the sky, not just because we can, but because in doing so, we welcome the unlimited possibilities and the potential that lies dormant within ourselves.
