1% Chance, 99% Faith.

There are these moments in life when you witness something so unreal that you can’t help but feel inspired. I glimpsed one of those moments yesterday. It wasn’t just the moment itself that inspired me, but all the unspoken efforts, the behind-the-scenes work and the interference of the universe that made it possible.

Imagine being in a situation where you have only a 1% chance, not of winning the ultimate trophy, but merely of earning the opportunity to compete for it.

Would you have the determination to pursue that 1%, knowing that despite all your efforts, it might not still be enough unless the universe favoured you?
Would you put everything on the line, knowing that even your best performance could go unnoticed if you don’t get there?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, IPL 2024

This is the story of RCB, an Indian franchise in the world of cricket. With a disastrous start to the season, they were already written off as “eliminated” with a 1% chance of making it to the final four. Having the worst-ever team standings at the end of the first month, every game for them in the following month became a do-or-die. For them to go from the bottom of the table to the final 4 was a mammoth task, requiring other teams to upset several potential contenders while still winning every single one of the remaining matches.

It was hard to believe this could be achievable.
Can things truly fall into place exactly when you need them the most?
Does the universe take your side if you tried your very best?

It began with their first victory in the critical do-or-die match. The energy shifted dramatically within the team, noticeable even to spectators. Everyone in the team had to hold onto their faith, facing a true test of their convictions. One win led to another and soon, they were in the final stages of the tournament with 5 wins in the bag. Their rise in the table was already remarkable, but their ultimate match hung in the balance due to uncertain weather conditions. With a 90% chance of rain forecasted, the game could have been washed away, along with their chances.

Last IPL tournament for Dinesh Karthik.

They prayed and clung to their faith, believing that if the universe granted them this opportunity, they would do everything in their power to snatch victory from the jaws of elimination.

On the day of the match, after the initial drizzle, the skies cleared. The universe had played its part, leaving the rest up to them. The outcome of the final game hinged not just on winning but on winning by a significant margin; otherwise, they would not qualify. However, the odds were no longer 1% now.

Their hunger radiated from the screen. They lived each ball with their hearts in their mouth and so did I. I cheered like a madman with every fall of a wicket. I wanted them to show me that it’s never over until it’s over —  something magical, something inspiring.

And they did. They won!
They fought for that 1% chance, not at winning the trophy but for securing a spot in the top 4 — a position where their chances of winning the trophy were significantly higher.

“There is a one per cent chance, and sometimes that chance is good enough”
– Virat Kohli.

This tale isn’t about them securing the trophy because, who knows, they might face elimination in tomorrow’s showdown for the trophy. But it’s a tale that reminds us that even with a 1% chance and 99% belief, there can be magic.

We often underestimate ourselves, believing we’re not capable of stepping up and delivering when needed. But what if we swapped our doubts for faith?

“Sometimes, we need to want something so bad that even god can’t help but give it to us. ”

Faith can bring down mountains. It can make us conquer peaks we think are unconquerable. Even when the road ahead looks tough, faith is that spark of hope that keeps us going, knowing that there could be something better waiting for us on the other side. Whether it’s a higher power, destiny or simply believing in the goodness of humanity, faith can serve as a compass giving us a sense of direction and purpose.

It’s not always easy to hold onto faith, especially when everything around us seems to be falling apart. But if we truly want something, shouldn’t we hold on to the belief that whatever the odds may be, we can reach our goal if we stay committed to the effort?

“I know that things may look bleak right now.
But you stand on the brink of possibility where even the smallest chance can lead to an extraordinary journey.
Believe in yourself, for your faith is a powerful catalyst.
No matter how intimidating the path appears, hold onto hope.
If there’s a 1% chance that you can make it, you need to take it.
The universe will always support you on your journey if your intentions are right.

This moment that you’re dreaming about?
You’re living for this moment.
So even if it’s a small step, take it every day.
Gradually, you’ll transition from doubt to belief, from fear to courage, and from limitation to endless possibilities.
Believe in yourself, for great things happen to those who believe!
It might be tough right now.
But maybe, all you need is a little bit of faith.”
